January 20, 2010 INTRO OF NEW 17TH PD PUBLIC SERVICE AREASFrom: george<at>sosotownwatch<dot>com Please plan to attend a meeting with Lt. J. Taylor of the 17th Police District on Thursday evening January 21 at 7:00 pm in St. Charles Church Gym/Basement (downstairs of the church). Use the ground floor entrance on Christian St. at the SW corner of 20th & Christian. Lt. Taylor will update us on the new Public Service Areas organized by the PD and police-community relations. In an effort to bring police and community into a closer working relationship, Captain Washington has organized the 17th Police District into three Public Service Areas (PSAs). Each PSA is assigned a police Lieutenant and a platoon of officers who will serve exclusively within the boundaries of the PSA. In this manner, police officers will become more familiar with and responsive to the neighborhood and its residents. Our neighborhood falls entirely within PSA #1, which extends east-west from Broad to Schuylkill and north-south from Lombard (one block north of South St.) to Federal St (two blocks south of Washington Ave). Thus, about 90% of PSA #1 is our SOSNA neighborhood. Lt. J. Taylor is our designated officer and I have been asked to serve as the civilian PSA co-leader. From a townwatch perspective, we will continue to patrol only within the existing SOSNA area. However, we anticipate developing cooperative relationships with other townwatch and community organizations that are within PSA #1 along our borders. Hope to see you at the meeting! Also, some more info about these new PPD PSAs from this thread... What is a PSA? A Police Service Area (PSA) is a geographical subdivision of a police district. Each PSA has the same officers and supervisors assigned on a continual basis. This will help the PSA team get to know the area, its chronic crime and disorder issues, and the community members who live there. The PSA is the geographic foundation for building a proactive policing strategy. The entire Department has now adopted the PSA structure in each district. What is the Role of the Community? Once the community facilitator and lieutenant team is created, they will initiate monthly meetings in their respective PSA to which you will be invited. The goal is to create a localized forum for you to discuss issues in your immediate neighborhood and to create a coordinated response to crime as a result of this partnership between the police and the community. |
